Lasagne is the new 'skinny jeans', says Gen Z - but are we ready to admit our favourite pasta is uncool?
Lasagne has had a sheet of shame layered over its molten mix of pasta, cheese and meat, as it was thrust into the latest millennial/Gen-Z category of "cheugy".
The term — pronounced chew-gee — has become increasingly popular on TikTok, typically used to define someone who follows out-of-date or unpopular trends.
Coined by software developer Gabby Rasson, 23, the phrase has become solidified in the zeitgeist after being spotlighted in The New York Times.

While it's hard to define what "cheugy" actually is, lasagne has been declared a definitive staple of the new-age term, and people aren't too happy about it.
An image of the pasta staple was shared on the dedicated Instagram page "Cheug Life" with the caption "lasagna [sic] is cheugy. Don't come for us. It just is."
"Definitely still making it for dinner though," the post added.
The declaration disgruntled some commenters, many refusing to believe a household dining option could ever lose its charm.
"I have to disagree on this one," wrote one.
"Keto is cheugy. Lasagna is a classic—-it can't be cheugy," said another.
Another wrote, "Lasagna is *timeless* and that is a cheugy hill I will die on."
While vague, cheugy is generally defined as things that are "the opposite of trendy" and "stylish in high school but no longer in style." Other items that have been lampoon include Juicy Couture tracksuits, Minions, and hanging flags on a bedroom wall as decoration.
TikTok Hallie Cain caused the term to skyrocket in popularity with a recent video.

"I have a new word for you that my friends and I use that you clearly are all in need of," she said.
"People will say things like 'this is millennial' or 'girlboss energy.' All of these terms are pointing to the same thing. The word, my friends, is 'cheugy.'"
Cain confirmed that despite the outrage sparked over the classification of lasagne being "cheugy", there was simply "a little cheug in all of us."
