Aussie salads set to suffer amid nationwide shortage of popular spring vegetable: 'Unsellable'
Spring onions, also known as shallots and scallions, are the latest Australian victim of the wet weather conditions being experienced in growing regions this year.
They are currently in short supply in supermarkets, and expensive.
Coles customers have been met with a Customer Notice next to their small display of spring onions this week explaining there is "limited availability" of the tasty vegetable.

"Due to recent extreme weather across key growing regions, there is limited availability of Spring Onions," it reads.
"We are working closely with our suppliers to improve supply as quickly as possible.
"We apologies for any inconvenience caused."
As a result of the supply issues, one bunch of spring onions costs a whopping $3 per bunch at the moment.

Usually by spring, customers will pay well under $2 for them.
It's such as shame because as soon as spring onions begin appearing in supermarkets, you can't help but think of delicious omelettes and soups and salads.
Spring Onions have a lovely, mild flavour that doesn't overwhelmed dishes like other onions can do.
Anton van den Berg, co-founder of Box Divvy, went into further detail about the issue with nine.com.au.
"We've had such a wet August, I believe more than 400mls. What happens is that with that amount of rain, growers call it "spring onions are sleeping" basically.

"They are literally falling over. Then what happens then is they start curling up and that means that they're still edible but unsellable because once they start curling up they don't look good on the shelf.
"So they basically don't pick them."
Other growers across the country saw intermittent weather impact their crops "and there was some mildew that crept into crops which basically caused them to turn yellow".
"So again, unsellable. So the crops have not had much luck."

The spring onions most shopper are seeing in stores are from Victoria, and supplies are limited.
Van den Berg says the wholesale price for spring onions is usually 80c to $1, but at the moment they can cost up to $4.80 a bunch.
Coles is selling their spring onions for $3 per bunch, Woolworths has them for $2.80 and Aldi has them for the lowest price at $2.49.
New crops have been planted and as they are quite easy to grow when the weather allows, he says customers can expect to see more spring onions in supermarkets "in a few weeks".

"They are shooting up pretty quickly, but at this point, we're still really relying on Victorian supply."
You can also try growing your own spring onions, by planting some offcuts in the garden, which would make for a more affordable and constant supply over spring and summer.
