Man charged $803 restaurant cancellation fee after girlfriend fell asleep

A man has been charged an exorbitant cancellation fee by a restaurant after he and his girlfriend missed their booking because she fell asleep.

Chloe Henshaw explains on TikTok (@xchloe_hensawx) that her boyfriend had booked a table at a local restaurant in their home country of France, planning a special night out.

When she fell asleep, her considerate partner decided to let her sleep.

The next day he received an email from the restaurant, charging him a 600€ ($803) fee.

In the TikTok video, we see the pair out for drinks, with Henshaw explaining it was her shout after they received the shocking email.

"When your boyfriend gets charged a 600€ cancellation fee for a restaurant because you fell asleep," text overlay reads on footage of her boyfriend feigning sadness.

"So you buy him a drink. I think that's pretty fair."

The video has been viewed over 70,000 times with many of her followers sharing their feelings about the charge.

"I would never sign such an agreement just saying," one person commented.

"OMG... been to Paris for years and that's the first I've heard of it," said another.

"That's bulls--t," one TikToker added.

It is common practice for some in-demand restaurants to charge cancellation fees as they miss out on business when reservations aren't filled.

In a plot twist, the restaurant refunded the couple after they decided to contact the owner.

It's a great end to what could have been an expensive story, but a reminder to check restaurant cancellation policies when making a booking.
