McDonald's Australia confirms a major product change in stores: 'You may have noticed'

McDonald's Australia customers at select stores may have noticed a major change to their drinks selection.

The change was brought to my attention by my daughter who ordered herself a frozen coke and some fries during a recent study session for an upcoming maths test.

The plastic lid on her Frozen Coke was completely changed.

Previously, the plastic lids on McDonald's drinks lids were opaque and the position for the straw insertion was in the middle.

The one my daughter showed me was clear plastic and the only place to put the straw was on the side.

I took my son to our local McDonald's the following day for his regular post-art class snack and his drink also had this latest lid, seemingly confirming change was afoot.

So we reached out to McDonald's Australia to ask about it.

A spokesperson told 9honey Kitchen: "You may have noticed a new lid on your cold drinks!

"As part of our commitments to 100 per cent of our guest packaging coming from renewable, recycled, or certified sources by the end of 2025, we are currently trialling rPET lids in some restaurants across NSW and QLD for the next few weeks," they said.

"rPET, or recycled polyethylene terephthalate, is a different lid design made from recycled materials, and we will look to implement this further in some states later this year," the spokesperson explained.

"We welcome feedback from our customers while we trial these lids."

My kids definitely have feedback. They love the new lids.

My daughter pointed out she prefers the straw insertion position being on the side because it gives her the option to use the straw to drink it, or to remove the straw and drink it like a takeaway coffee, straight from the opening on the side of the lid.

She also likes that she can see exactly what drink she has been given and how much of it is left, because it is clearly visible through the new plastic lids.

This is a good point because her regular preferred McDonald's treat is a blueberry and raspberry frozen drink and oftentimes we get one or the other flavour, but not both. Now we can check at a glance, without having to remove the lid.

I asked my son to let me know what he thought of the new lid and he said they were "fire". When I asked if that was good or bad he said that was "good".

"Fire" apparently means "cool good".

So from the survey sample size of two in my household, it's a thumbs up for the new McDonald's drinks lids.

I'm looking forward to trying them out myself in the future. I am a very slow beverage drinker. I take tiny sips over a couple of hours. So paper straws never last as long as I need them too.

Now, instead of throwing the drink away or trying to use a soggy straw, I can take it out and keep on drinking!

And I do love that the new lids are made out of recycled material. Especially when the environmentally friendly is better than the original.

I look forward to my next Strawberry Thickshake which is my absolute favourite treat on the McDonald's Australia drinks menu.
