Coles sells a number of delicious bakery items including their Custard Pull Apart scroll.

It's delicious, and just a tip. If you microwave it for around 10-30 seconds, it will taste freshly-baked.

One Coles bakery customer was recently enjoying their own Custard Pull Apart scroll when they noticed an interesting detail on the pack.

Under the name on the label, they clocked the letters 'SC' and began wondering what they could mean. Is it an acronym? An abbreviation? Slang?

They took their wonderings to Reddit's 'Coles' thread to try and solve the mystery.

"What does SC on bakery items mean?" they asked Redditers.

One Redditer suggested SC stands for "store cooked".

Another suggested it means "soooo custardy".

"Single coated" was another suggestion.

It was then that a Redditer claiming to be a Coles employee explained it, in great detail.

They said: "SC means scratch and indicates products made and baked from flour in store.

"PB means par bake and is baked to 85% cooked at a remote bakery, snap frozen and sent frozen to a store to be baked the last 15%. This is all of the Laurent and Coles finest sourdough range, and some rolls in some stores (if they are facing baker shortages, or are just a PB bakery). Sometimes but not always labelled," they continued.

A visit by 9honey Kitchen to a local Coles bakery found several items with 'SC' on the labels. 9honey/Jo Abi

"FD means frozen dough that is shaped from a remote bakery and frozen raw to be fully cooked at your bakery. Usually Danishes and crown pastries. Not usually labelled."

Their explanation was appreciated by curious Redditers, with one asking a follow up question about Coles' delicious cheese and bacon rolls, which, by the way, taste delicious microwaved or heated in an oven.

"They can be either and it depends on the store and store situation. They will be labelled either SC or PB after the product name (like in the post example)," they said.

"All of the pizza, cheese roll and tear & share range can be par bake but only some stores do it if they need to," they added.

One Redditer added: "Frozen rolls have FZ like the round rolls and hot dog rolls. Not FD."

A Coles spokesperson took pity on us all and explained the meaning of the mystery 'SC'.

"If there is one thing we all love, it's a reddit mystery!" a Coles spokesperson told 9honey Kitchen.

"Those Reddit-sleuths in the comments had it half right – the 'SC' is simply an internal code for our team which means it's baked in store," they explained.

"But here's a fun twist: just because a product doesn't have a code, doesn't mean it's not baked in store!" they continued.

"We have some bakery products that are only made from scratch in-store, so there is no need for the 'SC' code. We only use the 'SC' code on those products which could be baked in store OR parbaked before being delivered to the store before its final bake," they said.

The Coles spokesperson added: "Regardless of whether it's baked from scratch in-store, or parbaked ahead of time, you can rest assured that our behind-the-scenes bakers have spent hours making sure to get the recipes just right!"
