'My fussy kids and I tried a week of EveryPlate meals'

I was asked to review EveryPlate, a meal delivery service, and I wouldn't normally agree because my kids are such fussy eaters. I find myself making a couple of different meals each night and I save the leftovers for lunch throughout the week.

This means I mostly cook meals they like, and not meals that I would prefer each night.

So I was a bit excited to place my order for EveryPlate and I have never eaten so well. I didn't crave takeaway even once this week.

So I was a bit excited to place my order for EveryPlate and I have never eaten so well.  9Honey/Jo Abi

Here's how my week of meals played out.

Southern-spiced chicken rice bowl with charred corn salsa

This is the first meal I cooked from my EveryPlate box and it was a good one to start with. What I noticed right away was the high quality of the chicken tenderloins. I was a little sceptical about how the tinned corn would taste but once I pan-fried it as per the instructions provided it tasted amazing.

And I had forgotten how much I love Jasmine rice.

The kids opted not to have spinach leaves mixed in with theirs so I put extra on mine. I loved this one and the leftovers would make for a tasty lunch the next day.

American BBQ beef tacos with caramelised onion & slaw

My partner Shamus cooked up this one. He loves beef tacos, the hotter the better. Thankfully this dish was mild enough for the kids and Shamus just covered his with sriracha.

He said they were "pretty tasty" and he thought the quality of the beef was "really good" and the coleslaw was fresh.

He said the tortillas were good microwaved but even better if they're placed in a hot pan for a couple of minutes on each side.

Cheesy chicken fettuccine Alfredo with garlic bread & garden salad

This dish had the most ingredients and steps of all the meals I ordered, I just really, really love creamy pastas and this looked so delicious. But I left it until last, thinking it would be complicated.

It actually wasn't as complicated as I thought it was. Most of it is done in one pot, and adding the garlic seasoning and vegetable stock to the fried chicken smells amazing! Then adding the cream and the pasta water and the cheese, amazing.

I thought the chicken would be tough, but it was tender. And I was reminded of how much I love both fettuccine and shaved parmesan. We usually just eat spaghetti and grated parmesan, so this was a delicious change.

I did burn the garlic bread, which is just par for the course for me. I am a burner of things, but, after taking a couple of bites of the least burned parts I was reminded of how much I love garlic bread.

And because this is such a rich dish, the garden salad is the perfect side.

Asian sticky chicken tenders with garlic rice & green bean stir-fry

I didn't expect this chicken to taste as smokey and delicious as it was. It was the spice blend and olive oil that made it like this and adding the sweet chilli sauce at the end with a bit of water just added to how sticky and delicious it was.

The first step was to cook the green beans and carrots which would have been quite plain without the Japanese-style dressing which made it so yummy.

And I think I have already said that I have been reminded of how much I love Jasmine rice, it's very delicious and cooking it with the garlic clove makes it taste like something you would get at a restaurant.

Classic seared fish & roast sweet potato with cucumber salad & mayo

This one was very tasty. My son Philip was in the kitchen while I made this one and he wanted lemon for the fish, but I told him to taste it without, to give it a chance. The whole point of this is to try foods and flavours that aren't part of our regular meal plan.

And he loved it. The Basa fish was delicious and it cooked quickly and had crispy bits on it after being fried in the seasoning.

The sweet potato was a great side dish and I didn't think it would be ready by the time the fish and salad were ready but they were perfectly done by then.

Philip even ate the salad, which was zesty and delicious with mayonnaise and vinegar.

We didn't add mayonnaise to it, it was quite nice without it.

Overall positives

  • The quality of the ingredients, particularly the meat, is excellent
  • Portions for a family of four are perfect

  • Instructions are easy to follow
  • Good flavours for families
  • There are suggestions for steps your kids can help you with

Before you start cooking

Check you have the ingredients typically not supplied. For the meals I selected I needed balsamic vinegar, white wine vinegar, brown sugar, mayonnaise, olive oil, butter, mustard, honey and BBQ sauce. I had all of these except the white wine vinegar so I had to grab some of that.

Information on allergens is on the website. It's a good idea to check this before adding meals to your cart so you're prepared to do some swaps on the go. One of my kids is allergic to tree nuts and one is gluten-free and dairy-free. Most of the meals I chose were free of all of these allergens but I had to look them up on the site.

You will also need scissors to open the little packs.
