It's one of the most exciting (and excruciating) times of year for Brisbane locals – the Ekka is in town!

The Ekka – also known as the Royal Queensland Show – is Queensland's largest event, held annually at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

Families attending usually know what they're in for, huge crowds and a very expensive day out, but it seems this year the event's team has kicked things up a notch.

A Reddit user has taken to the platform the share the astronomical price of one particular meal at this year's show.

The "Ekka Special" is a "Blockbuster Burger & Chips" with everything you would expect from a good meal – double beef patties double smoky bacon, lettuce, tomato, special burger sauce and liquid cheese on a block bun.

When you go to the Ekka, you expect to fork out a little extra for food.

For something like this, you'd be thinking in the high twenties, maybe even low thirties considering you also get chips.

But this year, the Ekka has laughed in the faces of attendees and slapped a price tag that no one was expecting on what is simply a rather average sounding burger.

This particular Ekka Special will set you back $55.

No, that's not a typo, people are really being charged $55 for a burger that doesn't even have real cheese on it.

(Liquid cheese is absolutely not real cheese. We don't even want to hear the argument."

But it gets even better – there are add-ons!

If you want some extra (liquid) cheese, that'll be $2, thanks. More bacon? $3, please. You want a little more meat? $4, thank you.

Oh, you're coeliac? Just give us an extra $3 to make your already $55 meal edible.

But we're not the only ones shocked by this – some of the commenters on the Reddit thread were even more outraged.

"Is this…real?" one person questioned.

"I'd have to be clinically insane to spent 55 bucks on an Ekka burger," another wrote.

"I'm expecting several T-bone steaks in my burger at that price".
