TikTok challenge leads to shortage of Pascall Clinkers in supermarkets

It was a colleague with a teenage daughter who first alerted me to the so-called TikTok 'Clinker Challenge' which has been doing the rounds online.

I asked my daughter about it, and she confirmed that it has "been around for about a month".

"You know how Clinkers have three different colours inside?" she explained.

"If the 'Clinker clinks' then I'm gonna, for example, wear my hair up tomorrow."

Pascall Cadbury Clinkers come in three colours – pink, yellow and green which are raspberry, pineapple and lime flavours.

She said the person doing the challenge picks the colour they hope will "clink" for them.

For me that would be yellow, which in my opinion is the superior flavour, followed by green and then pink.

But with the trend going viral online, it's lead to a shortage of Clinkers on shelves in supermarkets.

I headed to my local shopping centre to confirm the challenge has lead to a shortage, and sure enough my local Coles has completely sold out of them, as has Aldi and The Reject Shop, both of which sometimes stock them.

A quick search online and Coles and Woolworths both list them as "out of stock".

My go-to when I can't find something anywhere else is IGA.

My local IGA isn't in a location easily accessible by teenagers, so I was hopeful.

I put in an Uber Eats order for them as they were listed as "in stock" but unfortunately they were replaced by bags of Maltesers instead.

Cadbury Australia, the makers of Clinkers, has been contacted for comment.

It isn't known when the challenge began, or who is behind it becoming a trend online.

And while the challenge started out with small choices like hairstyles, which outfit to wear or which friend to call, some TikTokers have taken it to the next level.

The most amusing part of this going viral is the fact Pascall Cadbury Clinkers are only available in Australia and very hard to get in other countries.

Overseas TikTokers have no idea what they even are.

"Are they like Maltesers?" one asked.

"I've been trying to get them to Canada," another said.

"Do the Clinkers taste different or do the colours taste the same?" one asked.

"I want Clinkers but I live in the UK soooooooooooooooooo I'm mad," another said.

Clinkers aren't the only delicious confectionary to disappear from supermarket shelves. Supplies of Werthers have also been hit with issues, although theirs are not TikTok related.

Alyssa Ghattas, Customer Service Representative at Stuart Alexander, tells nine.com.au: "Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing a production issue affecting all Werther's products.

"We are expecting new stock to arrive in late September, with products anticipated to be back on shelves and in stores by October.
