Cult favourite bakery closes in Melbourne: 'Difficult decision'

Cult favourite bakery Black Star Pastry has announced it will be closing its Melbourne store after five years of operation.

The owners shared the news on social media, beginning by saying: "Thank you Melbourne."

"To our cake-loving Melbournians, we have made the difficult decision to close our doors in Melbourne, with final slices being served this Sunday 18 August," their statement read.

"For five years, our team have poured their hearts, passion, and creativity into the making of each cake, pastry and coffee served across our stores."

The business explained "rising costs" and "a tough economic climate" and "an industry-wide staffing shortage" has forced their hand.

The owners explain they have been "forced us to consolidate our team and we will shift our focus to our original home of Sydney."

All Sydney stores in Newtown, Sydney CBD, Rosebery, and Chatswood, alongside pop-ups at Burwood and Broadway, will continue operating as normal.

"We want to thank our loyal regulars, once-in-a-while visitors and all those who have supported us in the wonderful city of Melbourne," they continued.

"We had a beautiful journey and many great friendships here and hope to see you one day, soon."

Loyal customers shared their sentiments following the statement.

"Goodluck guys. Things are very tough right now. We wish you all the best," one wrote.

"You're one of the reasons why I love coming to melb and you guys are closing??! Nooooooo," another said.

"This is devastating!!! I love black star! Was planning to do my cake with you guys next year," one commented.

"That's so sad! I had the chance to work at both St Kilda and Chadstone for a couple of months last year, both teams were incredible, wishing all the best to them!" another said.

Among the bakery's best sellers, which will remain available to their Sydney customers, are their truffle toastie made using potato focaccia, blueberry and lavender Danish, and signature Raspberry Lychee Cake and Strawberry Watermelon Cake.
