Little-known budget mayonnaise brand named Australia’s best

Aldi’s Colway Real Mayonnaise has been named Australia’s best supermarket mayonnaise by consumer group Choice, with the little-known budget buy beating the country’s best-known brands to take out the top spot.

Colway mayonnaise costs $2.79 for a 455g jar, almost half the price of better known brands such as Praise and Heinz.

Choice experts blind tasted 29 supermarket mayonnaise products, judging them on price, sodium content, and more.

Aldi’s Colway mayonnaise was given an expert score of 80 per cent. In second place was Woolworths Whole Egg Mayonnaise, which also received a score of 80.

This supermarket home brand costs a little less than the winner for a slightly smaller jar, priced at $2.80 for a 440g jar.

Aldi’s Colway Authentic Mayonnaise in a squeeze bottle came third, earning a 77 per cent expert rating. This 475g container costs $3.69 at the supermarket.

Pricier mayonnaise brand Hellmann’s landed in fourth place, with its Plant Based Mayo given a 77 per cent expert rating. It costs more than double Aldi’s Colway variety, with shoppers paying $8 for a 320g jar.

Hellmann’s also scored fifth place with its Light Mayonnaise, also awarded an expert rating of 77 per cent. This costs $8 for a 400g jar.

Best Foods Mayonnaise took out sixth place with a 73 per cent Choice expert rating. A 405g jar of Best Foods Mayonnaise will set you back $7 at the supermarket.

Coles’ home brand mayonnaise entered the chat in seventh spot. Coles Simply Mayonnaise Simply Creamy was awarded a 73 per cent expert rating, and is priced at $3.10 for a 470g jar.

Community Co Traditional Mayonnaise, sold at IGA supermarkets, took out eighth place, with a 73 per cent expert rating. This one costs $3.30 for a 500g squeeze bottle.

Popular brand Heinz placed ninth with its Heinz Seriously Good Original Mayonnaise, which was given a 73 per cent expert rating. This one costs $5.80 for a 295g squeeze bottle.

The brand also landed in 10th place with its Heinz Seriously Good Vegan Mayo which was awarded a 73 per cent expert rating, and is priced at $6.30 for a 270g squeeze bottle.

Your Condiment Co Whole Egg Mayo, sold at Woolworths, took out 11th place, with a Choice expert rating of 73 per cent. This product costs $2.95 for a 250g squeeze bottle.

In 12th place was Coles Rich & Creamy Mayonnaise, with a 70 per cent expert rating at the price of $4 for a 475g jar, and another home brand, Coles Thick & Creamy Whole Egg Mayonnaise, took out 13th place, with a 70 per cent expert rating at a cost of $3 for a 445g jar.

Coles’ Certified Organic Whole Egg Mayonnaise also placed 14th with a Choice expert rating of 70 per cent. This one will set you back $6.50 for a 445g jar, while Coles Nature’s Kitchen Plant Based Mayonnaise took out 15th spot with a 70 per cent expert rating and at a price of $5.25 for a 445g jar.

Woolworths Traditional Mayonnaise placed 16th with a 70 per cent expert rating. This one costs $3.10 for a 470g squeeze bottle.

Aldi’s Colway brand is back on the list in 17th place with its Creamy Squeezy Mayonnaise. This product was given a 70 per cent expert rating and is another budget buy, at $2.99 for a 475g bottle.

Brands that didn’t score too well include Kewpie Mayonnaise, which earned only a 67 per cent Choice expert rating, landing it at 18th on the list, followed by Praise Whole Egg Creamy Mayo, which earned the same score and placed 19th.

Thomy Delikatess Mayonnaise also placed further down the list, along with Hellmanns Real Mayonnaise, Praise Traditional Mayo, Praise 99% Fat Free Traditional Mayo, Woolworths Macro Organic Whole Egg Mayonnaise and Coles 97% Fat Free Mayonnaise.

Still, this leaves Aussie shoppers with plenty of highly-rated affordable mayonnaise brands to use on their salads and sandwiches as the weather heats up.
