There's nothing more satisfying than biting into a mini solid Easter egg. It's the perfect bite-size treat that can tide us over until we crack open larger hollow eggs and bunnies.

But which is the best mini solid chocolate Easter egg out of the many now available?

Consumer group Choice has done the 'hard' work for us, trying multiple mini solid chocolate Easter eggs to decide the winner of this year's crown.

Choice staff took part in a blind taste test, which included Cadbury and Darrell Lea as well as Coles and Woolworths' own brands. The test focused on plain chocolate varieties only.

And the winner is: Cadbury Dairy Milk Easter Eggs! These have been a popular choice with Australian shoppers since they were first released in the early 1900s.

In second place is Coles Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs, followed by Woolworths Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs in third and Darrell Lea Milk Chocolate Easter Hunt Eggs in fourth.

Three out of the four winners are made in Australia, except for Coles Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs which, interestingly, are made in Italy.

Twenty of the 27 Choice staffers who participated in the blind taste test chose Cadbury as their favourite, with six choosing Coles, Woolworths eggs receiving one vote, and Darrell Lea falling short with no votes.

"More than one taster described the Darrell Lea option as chalky, saying it didn't melt in the mouth as well as some of the others, though another judge thought it was quite creamy," Choice reported on its website.

Coles Easter eggs were described as "pretty good" and "the fanciest", while Woolies' Easter eggs were labelled "dusty" by one staffer.

Most tasters were able to quickly and easily identify the Cadbury Easter eggs immediately.
