On Tuesday morning a caller told 3AW's Breakfast's Rumour File with Jimmy Bartel and Mark Allen he had that exact thought after picking up a 12-inch sub.

"Last Friday I went and treated myself to a footlong and I thought, 'Hang on, that don't look right.'"

So there was only one thing to do: "I got back to the ute, I pulled a ruler out me pocket and measured it".

The caller said it measured in at 11 inches.

So, as investigative journalists in constant pursuit of the truth, we headed down to our local Subway to put it to the test.

We ordered three different subs: a chicken classic, a chicken teriyaki and an Italian BMT (yum).

All three sandwiches were on Italian herbs and cheese bread (also yum) because really, what other option is there? One toasted and two fresh.

When you think about what happens to bread when it's toasted, it loses a bit of fluffiness making it just the tiniest bit smaller.

Now, the juicy part.

We measured each sandwich incredibly carefully taking two measurements: the first from the base of the sandwich and the second from the top.

When measuring by the top, each sandwich hit the 12-inch mark, the Italian BMT even hit 12.5 inches.

But, when measuring from the base, each sandwich came in at 11.5 inches.

So, clearly, each loaf of bread does reach 12 inches at its longest point. But that poses a new question: How do Subway workers ensure each bread loaf hits exactly one foot long?

"Subway bread is an essential ingredient to each guest's favourite sandwich," says a Subway spokesperson.
