Aldi launch new range for under $6 - placing supermarket giant in direct competition with Coles and Woolies

Aldi Australia has launched an exciting new range that puts it in direct competition with Coles and Woolies.

The discount grocery retailer has launched a new range of cookies, which bear a striking resemblance to those already on sale at the major supermarkets.

And it's a smart move. After all, cookies are delicious and are one of the most popular treats sold in the bakery sections of the major supermarkets.

Aldi's offering is from Billie's Bakehouse. Customers can purchase a tray of 24 made up of Anzac, double choc and choc chip cookies for just $5.79.

Coles sells a similar product; a Mixed Cookie Tray from their Coles Bakery range but this one will set customers back $6.50.

While Woolworths doesn't have a mixed pack of cookies listed on their website, they do sell trays of 24 cookies in single flavours of Anzac, choc chip and Funfetti cookies for $6.00.

Aldi Australia tells 9honey the Billie's Bakehouse Range has been rolling out in stores since February.

Also in the range, Billie's Bakehouse Triple Choc Cookies in a pack of five for $3.49.

These are described as featuring a "rich combination of milk chocolate, dark choc and white choc pieces".

"Perfect as a sweet treat with coffee or as an afternoon snack, they're sure to satisfy your cravings," Aldi's website states.

Also spotted at Aldi, Bon Apetit Chocolate Chip Brioche Sliced Loaf selling for $4.69. This range of chocolate chip products also came in rolls and croissants.

Then there is a range of Wild Origins Artisan Sourdough $5.99 per loaf.

We spotted this in Dark Rye, Rustic White, Wholemeal, Multigrain, Soy & Linseed and Cracked Wheat.

Aldi's bakery range has vastly improved in recent years, offering an incredible selection of breads including gluten-free items, and sweet treats.

The best cookies you can buy at supermarket bakeries

Customers will find everything from baguettes, muffins, donuts, pikelets, waffles and rolls as well as hot dog rolls, pizza bases, English muffins, cakes and slices.

Aldi recently stopped selling single-serve bakery items in their Aldi Corner Store locations, choosing instead to focus on their packaged bakery range.

While Aldi offers less variety than Coles and Woolworths, its careful selection of items seem to be hitting home with loyal customers.

Aldi stocks approximately 1,800 items compared with the around 25,000 at the major supermarkets.

Approximately 90 per cent of Aldi's products are exclusive brands which cannot be purchased elsewhere.

It comes days after Aldi confirmed it's teaming up with DoorDash to trial an on-demand grocery delivery service for the first time in its almost 25-years in Australia.

The trial is currently only available in Canberra, with Aldi customers in other parts of the country left to wait until later this year for the service to roll out further.
