Aldi shoppers have been left in a panic after a popular snack disappeared from supermarket shelves.

The news came via Reddit, with one Aldi customer asking if European Spiced Speculaas had been discontinued.

"I'm gutted as I suspect Aldi has discontinued my favourite biccies, European Spiced Speculaas," they wrote.

"They appear to have been replaced by the completely inferior Speculoos Biscuits (see bottom pic). Anyone else share my despair?"

The Aldi fan explained they hadn't seen European Spiced Speculaas for "a couple of months" and decided to try Speculoos "thinking it was just a change in packaging" but were left disappointed.

"I was horrified by the sugary biscuit in place of the exquisite spice of the Speculaas."

They ended their post by saying they are "really hoping that there's just been some kind of delay or something that's affected the stocking of Spiced Speculaas and that they haven't actually been discontinued".

Some suggested Biscoff cookies may be a better alternative, however one Redditor commented: "Biscoff is tasty, but COMPLETELY different to Speculass!"

Adding to the drama is the recent 'Japanese Yoghurt' social media trend which as seen food lovers around the world add Biscoff, Speculaas and Speculoos to single-serve Greek yoghurt tubs and leaving them overnight to create delicious, high-protein snacks.

This has lead to nationwide Greek yoghurt shortages, especially Chobani.

Aldi Australia confirmed to nine.com.au that Belmont European Spiced Speculaas Biscuits have been discontinued, and the Belmont Speculoos Biscuits are being sold in their place.

So that's one less biscuit to choose from for the viral 'Japanese Cheesecake' creations sweeping the globe.

There is some hope for Aussie shoppers.

In the past, items that have been officially discontinued by Aldi have been known to make occasional appearances in their Special Buys section.

This was the case with Colway Spicy Barbeque Sauce which was removed from Aldi's permanent range in 2025, only to reappear as part of their Special Buys earlier this year.

In further difficult news for Aldi shoppers, their popular $8.89 Greek Spinach & Cheese Spanakopita has been selling out, leaving customers disappointed.

"Tell me the Urban Eats Spanakopita is good without telling me it's good," one Aldi fan said on Reddit.

Thankfully this product hasn't been discontinued, it is simply selling at a rate faster than Aldi can keep up with.

The elusive nature of Aldi's range only serves to make them more sought after by Aldi loyalists, with many taking to Reddit and other social media channels to share their despair when they go missing and then joy at their return.

This is further fueled by their exclusivity. Most Aldi products can't be found at alternate supermarkets.

Consumer psychologist Gavin Northey explained to nine.com.au this all helps to strengthen a "tribal" mentality in Aldi Australia shoppers.

"Over the past 20 years, Aldi has been very clear about its business model and how it differs from the main supermarket brands in Australia," he said.

"When the attachment is strong, people do not want to lose that connection and dislike change," Northey explains.

"People fear the unknown and don't want to lose that special thing (or product) that makes them feel happy, satisfied or special."

That too strengthens Aldi customer's satisfaction when they discover their favourite products have returned.
