Despite Twitter speculation suggesting she'd be giving the event a miss, Anne Hathaway showed up in spectacular style, marking her first Met Gala appearance since 2018.

The actress wore Versace, and arrived on the arm of Donatella Versace herself.

If the style of Hathaway's dress looks a little familiar, there's good reason: it's reminiscent of one of the most famous dresses worn by a celebrity during the '90s.

In 1994, Liz Hurley became a style icon overnight when she arrived at the premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in a plunging black Versace dress secured with gold safety pins.

Hathaway's version of the design is white tweed, teamed with fingerless gloves and rosettes at the bust, a nod to Chanel's signature flower.

Oh, and another key difference is she didn't accessorise with Hugh Grant, a crucial missed step.

A red carpet cat-trick

Not one but three Met Gala attendees dressed as cats this year. A cat-trick!

Doja Cat, Lil Nas X and Jared Leto all channelled feline energy in a likely homage to Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld's beloved cat.

Janelle Monae and Saturday Night Live star Chloe Fineman also paid tribute to the famous Burmese with sweet cat-shaped handbags.

However, it's Lil Nas X who really turned heads, having bejewelled his entire body, no less.

The rapper was definitely dressed as a cat, even meowing at reporters, but some felt the look was reminiscent of something else...

Regardless, it was a foolproof way to upstage just about everyone else at the Met Gala.

Seeing double

It's not often you see a sartorial double-up on the Met Gala red carpet, but never say never!

Olivia Wilde and Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang clearly had the same excellent idea, wearing near-identical dresses in different colours.

While Wilde and Zhang's gowns were reportedly created by different dressmakers, the inspiration is the same: the famous "violin dress" Karl Lagerfeld designed for Chloé in 1983.

There were some key differences: Wilde's dress included accompanying gold cuffs, while Zhang's featured a cape and fuller skirt.

Bumps on the carpet

Two of the high-profile attendees were accompanied by unexpected "plus ones".

Model Karlie Kloss and tennis legend Serena Williams both revealed their pregnancies on the red carpet.

"This is the first time I'm sharing my news, it's very special," Kloss, who is expecting her second child, told reporters.

Williams said she was feeling "pretty good", saying she and husband Alexis Ohanian were "just so happy" about their impending second child.

"There's three of us here," she said.

Nailed it

There were plenty of impressive manicures on the red carpet, but Rita Ora's took the cake.

The singer had pearls and chains streaming from her fingertips, an homage to '90s Chanel.

An unexpected show-stopper

In a sign we all need a little more sleep, the appearance of a cockroach on the red carpet sparked much excitement.

Vulture declared the creature "slayed" as it meandered along the carpet – with a photographer in pursuit – while The Cut labelled it "the real star" of the night.

Despite its prowess, Variety reports the cockroach ultimately met its demise. RIP, little friend. We hardly knew thee.
