The Duchess of Sussex has returned to her royal style roots in her first joint outing with Prince Harry since their return to the UK.

While the couple are now considered public figures, not working royals – a point King Charles has emphasised following their move back from the US – Meghan revived the sartorial look she often favoured during her royal years.

For the couple’s outing in Nottingham on Thursday, the former actress went monochromatic – a styling technique, also called ‘colour drenching’, that involves wearing numerous pieces in varying tones of one colour.

Meghan teamed a turtleneck, skirt, coat and accessories in complementary hues of burgundy and eggplant.

It’s a simple yet effective approach, one the duchess embraced in some of her more memorable royal appearances before she and Harry left the UK.

You could argue it became her royal uniform, of sorts.

For her first visit to Sussex in 2018, she teamed a deep green leather skirt with a silk blouse in a slightly warmer hue.

She also wore a green-on-green ensemble during her tour of Dublin the same year.

The same year, during a visit to the National Theatre, Meghan – then pregnant with son Archie – teamed a pale blush pink dress with a blazer in almost the same shade.

In 2020, hours before she and Harry dropped their ‘royal exit’ bombshell, the former Suits star attended an event at London’s Canada House in shades of brown, with a slip skirt, jumper, coat and heels.

It just goes to show that while a lot has changed in the years since Meghan and Harry stepped back as working royals, her approach to style is timeless.

That also applies to her ‘diplomatic dressing’, a technique the royals often embrace during their public appearances.

Every piece in Meghan’s outfit on Thursday was from a UK-based brand, including her coat and turtleneck, the work of luxury label Joseph, and the pencil skirt from The Fold.
