Fashion Week forecast: The breakout trends from New York, London, Milan and Paris

You’re not imagining it: there have been a lot of Fashion Weeks lately. From New York to London and now Milan, three of the world’s capitals have been flooded with fashion.

We Aussies might be thousands of kilometres away from the action, but we can still take a leaf out of the style playbook. Here are three of the Fashion Week breakout trends we can’t take our eyes off.

Knee-skimming skirts

Skirts were the order of the day at the Prada show in Milan overnight, with no less than 63 versions appearing on the runway – goodbye, pants and dresses.

The designs varied in colour, material, silhouette and styling, but one thing was consistent: the length.

Every one of the skirts hovered at, or just above or below, the knee. Anyone who remembers the early 2000s is likely having flashbacks.

The unexpected trend that dominated the Brownlow red carpet

“I think of a skirt the way some people think of a T-shirt – a place to express what I think,” Miuccia Prada told The Guardian of the all-skirt show.

Her co-creative director Raf Simons spoke to the garment’s versatility.

“Whether you want to go to work, or be sexy, or be relaxed with your kids, you can wear the skirt with whatever you choose,” he said.

A new take on the trench

The trench coat is a timeless wardrobe staple, particularly for between-seasons weather. We all know there’s no re-inventing the wheel, but that doesn’t mean the wheel can’t have a makeover.

Burberry did exactly that at London Fashion Week, sending an array of colourful and embellished trenches down the catwalk.

The classic silhouette with all its bells and whistles – belts, epaulettes, storm guards, you name it – remained, but everything else had a refresh.

From leather to sheer fabric to floral embroidery and bold colour palettes, it seems nothing was off the table design-wise.

All tied up

A jumper tied over the shoulders was once a hallmark of ‘preppy’ fashion – think: ’80s country clubs.

But in 2026, it’s become a widely-embraced styling technique.

Coach helped to seal its renaissance at New York Fashion Week, showing us sweaters and shoulders aren’t the only way to embrace the look.

The fashion house sent models down the catwalk with blazers slung oh-so-coolly around their waists.

This look is perfect for mild spring days when you need a warmer layer within reach but don’t want to carry it around.

We have to admit, we love a fashion trend that’s as practical as it is chic.
