Two details in Taylor Swift’s VMAs makeup have fans doing double takes

There aren’t many certainties in life, but Taylor Swift rocking up to an awards show with a bold red lip and classic winged eyeliner is one of them.

Or so we thought.

Days after dropping four new songs as an ‘encore’ to her last album, the singer has delivered another surprise, ditching – well, mostly – her signature makeup combo at the 2026 VMAs.

Swift, 36, hit the red carpet in a black and silver outfit, completing the look with lipstick in a dusty rose hue and a more graphic take on cat-eye liner than we’re used to seeing from her.

Her usual dramatic wing was benched in favour of a more ’60s aesthetic, incorporating both black and white liner – both above and below her lashes – to create a ‘shadow’ effect and really make the eyes pop.

A casual observer might look at the photos and see nothing of note, but for fans who’ve followed Swift’s every style move for years, it’s a major refresh.

So dedicated has she been to her go-to combo – it’s been at least a decade – the music icon has become something of a poster child for Millennial makeup.

She even unwittingly found herself at the centre of a fierce intergenerational debate over whether the winged eye is now a ‘cringe’ relic.

It seems plenty are loving the look – but even more so, the fact Swift is trying something new.

“I love when Taylor puts the damn red lipstick down,” one wrote on X, while another said, “The way this eye makeup makes her eyes pop??? OBSESSED.”

“Her accentuating her eyes instead of her lips for the first time in years. Come get your 10s Taylor,” another said.

While we doubt Swift will ever fully abandon her (sing it with us) “classic red lip thing that you like”, she’s certainly been moving away from the blue-toned red lippie of late.

For most of her appearances this year, Swift has opted for a rosy pink lip, having shifted towards more coral and orange shades of red last year.

This includes the promotional images the star shared to tease the release of her single Patient Zero, and her CSI-themed video cameo at the Emmys earlier this month.

What can we say? Swift’s Red era might be eternal, but it seems her red lips might not be.
