A vet has revealed the five things he'd never do with his own dog after his experiences as a vet.

One of those is not feeding his dog a popular treat of bones and antlers, which can lead to big problems for your pooch.

Ben the Vet explained why this is on his list in a TikTok video.

"When you've spent half an hour performing an enema removing bone fragments from a dog's colon you'd probably feel the same," he said.

"But it's not just that, they are just too hard for them to chew on and they fracture their teeth. So commonly I see a lot of dogs with slab fractures of their carnassial teeth, which is their last pre-molar teeth on the top and this is painful, it can lead to tooth root abscess formation and they need to have the teeth extracted.

"And bones if they're swallowed in large pieces can cause blockages in the esophagus or in the gut and also constipation, as mentioned, so I just wouldn't take the risk."

Another thing Ben wouldn't do with his own dog is "let them walk off lead on a road".

This decision has its roots in an experience Ben had when he was 16 and saw a shih tzu being run over by a tyre on a van (the dog and people in the car were fortunately fine).

Even if your dog is well-trained, Ben says it's not worth the risk because they can easily get startled and bolt off.

Also on the list is never leaving a dog alone in a car because of how hot it can get even if a window is open, as it can lead to heatstroke or worse.

Ben also wouldn't feed a dog raw meat because of the risk of infection, which Ben says isn't just for the dog but can extend to family members if the dog licks you after eating raw meat.

And finally Ben says he "would not let my dog get fat".

"Well I would try my best not to. It's so easy to do, food is the way to a dog's heart... I would do my best to keep them nice and slim so that they are less likely to develop arthritis at a young age and hopefully will live as long a life as possible."
