Dr Katrina Warren shares 10 tips to tire out a high-energy dog

Picking a dog to join your family is an important choice – and for those who decide on a high-energy breed, you're certainly in store for some fun.

These include the retrievers, spaniels, collies, pointers, German shepherds and grey hounds.

The breeds are beautiful pets to own, but ones that require a lot of activity, which takes some planning. As Dr Katrina Warren says: "A tired dog is a happy dog."

She has owned Bordie collies most of her life, and her current dog Chilli certainly enjoys a lot of running.

Here are Dr Katrina's tips for tiring out high-energy dogs.

1. Vary your walks

Taking different routes when walking your dog gives them the stimulation of new sights, smells and sounds, and has the added benefit of keeping the walks interesting for you as well.

2. Invite a friend with a dog to join you

Dogs love interacting with other dogs, and this works best when both pets get along and are buddies.

3. Enrol in dog training classes

It's important to teach your dog some of the basics and for you to learn the best way to lead them during your many activities, especially walking.

4. Rotate their toys

Just like children, dogs get bored playing with the same toys over and over again and will benefit from new and interesting toys to play with.

5. Make them work for their food

Feeding time is the perfect opportunity to train your dog and provide extra stimulation, with the added benefit of being used as a reward system for teaching and changing dog behaviours. There are also some great toys that can be used to hide treats in.

6. Play fetch

This classic game is perfect for your dog to play each day and ensures they are given the opportunity to run in short bursts, as fast as their legs can carry them.

7. Teach them some new tricks

Dogs love to learn new tricks and please their owners. Get your dog using their brain and it can be so much fun.

8. Treasure hunt with treats

Hide treats around your home for them to search for and find. This provides extra stimulation for your pet.

9. Use a Kong toy

Kong toys are great for dogs as they provide stimulation in multiple ways and will keep your dog busy for longer periods of time, especially if you fill them with peanut butter.

10. Hide their toys around the house

This is a fun activity for dogs and one you can participate in with words and sounds of encouragement.
