Couple's shock find in desk drawer after vet told them rescue cat was 'probably just fat'

A couple who took in a rescue cat has got more than they bargained for after a waking up to a surprising find in their study.

One of them shared their story on Reddit, revealing they took the feline to the vet to get spayed after finding her at a cafe but suspected she might be pregnant.

Instead of confirming the cat was expecting the vet had a different diagnosis.

"Our vet couldn't tell if she was pregnant and told us most probably just fat. We did noticed her nipples," the cat owner said.

It turns out the cat was indeed pregnant and not 'just fat' because the owner walked into their study four days ago to find newborn kittens in one of the desk drawers.

"I woke up today and went into my study, and noticed half the wires on the floor. Went to close the drawers, and WTF for the next 10min while frantically calling wife. Had to emergency prep the guest room as a nursery," they wrote.

"We are busy turning the study upside down now to see if we missed any… what a day."

Those who read the Reddit post had plenty of questions, including how a vet couldn't tell the cat was pregnant.

In response the cat owner said, "We got assigned a young vet for this girl, she was maybe fresh out of school. That said my wife did state we will not be going back to her anymore."

They also gave more context as to why it may have been hard to tell the cat was expecting.

"[The vet visit] was about two weeks ago, and tbh her tummy wasn't as big as some of the really heavily pregnant cats we've seen. It also didn't help that she was just recently rescued and we thought she's just gorging on food and getting fat."

Another person commented on the shocked look the mother cat had in one of the photos.

"She looks as surprised as you do," one commented.

"I had that same look on my face after my first childbirth!" joked a Redditor.

Others wanted the cat owner to take inspiration from the desk drawer for the kittens' names.

"Plz name them things like HDMI, VGA, USB," one suggested.

Jokes aside, the now-kitten owner asked for advice on looking after kittens, wondering if it was OK to handle them at this stage or if that would interfere with their relationship with their mother.

"My experience with cats/dogs mommas are that they are quite capable of keeping track of their babies. And a healthy kitten is quite loud when hungry, so I'm quite confident that you'll hear it if she missed one," a cat owner said.

"You should weigh them once a day - a kitchen scale is great, with a bowl on top to keep them contained, and weigh in grams...," another cat owner wrote.

"Momma should get kitten food - wet and dry and as much as she wants. You can't overfeed a nursing mom."

In an updated post the rescue cat owner said they'd decided to keep the kittens and that they're doing well.

However, they didn't end up naming them after computer accessories.

"Once again thank you all so much for the help and encouragement, and say hi to Omar Little, Bubbles, and Kima, named after some of our favourite characters from HBO's The Wire," they said.
