Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski welcomes rainbow baby via surrogate: 'So grateful'

Former Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski has welcomed a baby girl, Georgie, via a surrogate after years of miscarriages and failed fertility procedures.

"We are so grateful that we get to make this announcement that our baby girl is here," Lipinski, 41, shared on Instagram.

"This little embryo that Todd [husband Todd Kapostasy] and I made together has come to life," she continued.

"We are so grateful and forever thankful for our surrogate. Mikayla, thank you for carrying her safely into our arms."

Lipinski reflected on the past five years of hardship, saying she can't help but think of "all those shots, surgeries, multiple retrievals to replenish all of the miscarriages and failed transfers I endured, the miscarriages that felt like they broke me more and more each time and to the times that Todd and I thought are our dream would never come true."

The athlete said she wishes she'd never gone through it but is grateful she found the strength to keep going, counting herself "very lucky."

"Georgie, we have thought about you for half a decade," she said to her daughter.

"You are so loved. You are EVERYTHING."

She ended her post by telling those struggling with infertility that she is "rooting so hard for you all."

Lipinski revealed she and Kapostasy were expecting a child via surrogate during an episode of the podcast Unexpecting on October 5.

She explained after four miscarriages, six failed IVF transfers and eight egg retrievals, they had decided to "think of other options."

She told People when her daughter was born she felt "so much relief."

"I felt like I could breathe again," she said.

Lipinski had shared her struggle with infertility on her social media channels, including the incredible high of hearing her baby's heartbeat for the first time to each of her terrible losses prior to finding a surrogate.

In one confronting post, Lipinski shared a photo of multiple ultrasound photos from her previous pregnancies and pregnancy tests she had taken over the years.

Her followers are thrilled for the couple who have shared several photos of their daughter Georgie who is dressed in a t-shirt that reads: "Mommy's little ice-skater."

Lipinski, who won a gold medal in ice skating at the 1998 Olympics, retired from the sport in 2002 having competed since she was a child.

She has since appeared on Stars on Ice and Project Runway as well as several other TV shows including Masterchef in the US.
