The $59 Kmart buy every child is asking for this Christmas that they'll cherish forever

There is absolutely no debate when it comes to a timeless Christmas gift that children have been requesting to see under the Christmas tree for the past 100 years.

The bicycle is not only a classic present when children are old enough to start riding, it's also the stuff of cherished memories.

To find out just how important bikes are to children we asked adults for their recollections of the special moment when they first received their first one.

"I BEGGED my parents for a boys BMX. A black one. I didn't want a girl bike with a basket. I wanted to tear the streets up, and I got it! I flew up and down our street," Jo recalled. 

"We were all mostly on our bikes all afternoon and all day. No devices, no tech. I lived on that thing. Fell off it quite a few times too! But no better feeling than whizzing around with my friends."

More than the thrill of riding and exploring the neighbourhood or local parks, bikes allow for special bonding time with parents, older siblings and relatives.

"I have a particularly fond memory of my Dad tying his bike to mine with rope and we'd cycle along together tandem-style around our village – I must've been about 6. Cycling was a fun way of bonding with my dad that we carried on until adulthood," Sienna shared.

The perfect bike is required to create those moments and memories and there are plenty at Kmart to choose from.

When kids are ready for a bike with pedals the 30cm Rascal and Daisy bikes are fantastic and budget-friendly at just $59. The size in the name refers to the wheel, which, according to Kmart's bike size guide is suitable for those measuring 70cm to 97cm in height, meanwhile the bike is recommended for ages three and above.

It has rear coaster brakes, removable training wheels and an adjustable seat. The Rascal comes in black with green and blue detailing, while the Daisy is pink with pops of aqua and purple.

Of course just as memorable as getting a bike for Christmas, is parents staying up late to build them. But there won't be sighs and swear words with these bikes because shoppers have found them straightforward to put together.

"It's actually a good quality bike for the price you pay and easy to assemble," a customer said of the Rascal.

"Went together easily, nice and sturdy and baby girl loved it… Just perfect," a dad said of the Daisy. 

For ages four and up and 97cm to 122cm tall, the 40cm oil slick bikes are ideal. They cost $99 and come in 40cm oil slick bikes and pink-purple colours. This bike has training wheels which is helpful for children who haven't started or transitioned to a pedal bike yet.

"Fantastic first bike for my son. He absolutely loves it," a mum said in a review.

"Excellent bike to learn on for my grandchildren. Not expensive and the kids have had a lot of fun. Easy to assemble," another said.

For slightly older children there is the 50cm Neptune and Mercury bikes, which are $99 each.

The Neptune bike is pink with pops of aqua while the Mercury bike is blue with pops of orange. Both are suitable for eight years plus and 122cm to 142cm height.

And they've been adored by countless customers over the years.

"Bought this bike for my six-year-old son and he loves it. Easy to assemble and goes very smoothly," a review said of the Mercury bike.

"My son loves his new bike. Relatively easy to put together. Great quality. Good Value. My son has not wanted to get off it," another said.

The Neptune has even more glowing reviews.
