'I overhauled my pantry with $54 of Kmart buys and it's finally functional'

One look at my pantry and it basically sums up the inside of my brain, too much stuff going on and a lot of half-hearted attempts at organisation.

I've tried and tried in the past to sort the pantry out, but the issue I have is the space in my pantry is small, with everything spread between two main cupboards on opposite sides of the kitchen.

So, with the goal of finally getting organised and giving it a much needed makeover, I headed off to Kmart and my god, if you're in the same boat as me it is the place to go.

After a trip to Kmart and $54 spent, I was able to reorganise my Kitchen pantry.  Supplied

But it wasn't an easy process.  Supplied

For just over $50, I got exactly what I needed to fully sort out my pantry and I can safely say, it's finally functioning how I need it to.

The first thing I did – and this I think is the big key to getting organised properly – is measuring your space and trying to sort out what you actually need, rather than just buying a heap of containers and hoping for the best.

I was blown away by how much good stuff Kmart actually has in terms of pantry organisation, from spice racks to tiered shelving to the one thing I knew I needed, the wire undershelf hanging basket.

As soon as I saw it online this wire under-shelf basket was at the top of my wishlist.  Supplied

The difference in containers is great too, with options from modular to stylish bamboo styles which look just as good on display as they do behind your cupboard doors.

I was also eager to get my hands on some sleek glass cannisters for bench storage but unfortunately, they were sold out at my local Kmart. Hopefully I can get them next time.

I settled on the hanging basket, a couple of the modular containers, the eight-piece bamboo lid storage container set and a few bag clips. Was there way more I thought about getting? Absolutely… but did I necessarily need it, well, not today.

I got home, washed out all the containers and set to work on pulling everything out of the pantry.

This was the moment I looked around the kitchen and thought "why am I doing this" and instant regret kicked in.

I decided this was also finally the time to swap where everything was in my poorly functioning pantry for a couple of reasons.

It was at this point I began to wonder if I'd made a mistake.  Supplied

The way it's laid out now, if my toddler stands at the baby gate blocking off the kitchen and the cupboards are open she can see her snacks, which often ends up in a tantrum while I'm cooking dinner.

I also realised the smaller space had more stuff shoved in, which meant swapping sides was going to give me more space that worked.

The bamboo top plastic containers are great for a few reasons, but mainly because the tall one is the first container that finally fits spaghetti in it. Something that I've struggled to find in the past.

They also look great and because they're plastic I'm not worried about dropping one and smashing it when I'm reaching up into the top of the pantry, which is a win.

I've got to say the modular ones are some of the best containers too, because it makes stacking things so easy with no risk of containers slipping around.

Now, I have a couple of previous Kmart buys, like the turn table and the white storage tubs which you can still get which were a previous attempt to get organised, and when it all works together, it really works.

The bag clips are also fantastic for anyone who's got packets of half eaten snacks and needs a way to seal them up, they're also very cute too.

I'm so happy with how it worked out and I can safely say that the usable space in the pantry now is so much bigger than before.

Nothing is shoved up in the back where I can't reach, and everything is very clearly on display - and also well hidden from my two-year-old too.

The end product was beyond my wildest dreams, and well worth the effort! Supplied

The only person who's not happy with it is my husband, who's now struggling to find things but that's got nothing to do with how it's organised, more because I've overhauled the whole thing.

I love how it's turned out and honestly, I think I'll be going back to Kmart for some of the more stylish containers, like the Lemon Canisters, which would look great on the bench.

So, for just over $50 it was not only easy but so worth it.
