Jill Biden's private note to Melania: 'What would be the point of nastiness?'

Jill Biden has reached out to Melania Trump ahead of Donald Trump's second term as US president.

The US first lady, 73, has sent a note to Melania, 54, ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20.

She told the Washington Post she "congratulated her and offered help" in the note.

"What would be the point of nastiness?" she explained to the publication.

Jill sent the note despite Melania reportedly giving the customary meeting with the current US first lady a miss following her husband's election victory in November.

For years, it has been a tradition for outgoing first ladies to host tea for the incoming one and provide a tour of the property, facilitating their own transfer of power.

Jill has served beside US President Joe Biden since 2021, when he beat Trump in the 2020 election.

Trump's first term in office ran from 2017 until 2021 and he returns for his second term this year, having beaten Biden's Democratic replacement Kamala Harris in a contentious election.

Trump met with Biden on this occasion, and the Bidens will be at the inauguration on January 20.

Michelle Obama won't attend the inauguration, according to reports. Her husband, former US President Barack Obama will attend, along with George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join their husbands for the swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, representatives said.

"Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies," said a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama that was shared with The Associated Press.

"Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration."

Melania spoke to Fox & Friends ahead of her second term as first lady ahead of the release of an Amazon documentary movie that will chronicle her move back into the White House.

She told the show she will be based in the White House where she is re-establishing her team and future endeavours as First Lady.

"I will be in the White House, and when I need to be in New York I will be in New York, when I need to be in Palm Beach I'll be in Palm Beach," she said.

"But my first priority is to be a mum, to be First Lady, to be a wife, and once we are in on January 20 to serve the country."

Son Barron, 18, currently attends New York University's Stern School of Business and so will remain at the family's Trump Tower home.

"I think he will come and visit, yes," Melania said, adding that he is more than welcome to bring his friends too.

"Yeah, whatever he would like to do," she continued.
