Andy Murray reveals he bought a Ferrari amid break-up from wife Kim Sears

Tennis legend Sir Andy Murray may be sitting out Wimbledon after retiring from the sport that made him a multimillionaire.

But that doesn't mean he's no longer in the spotlight, embarking on a new career as a motivational speaker which saw him take to the stage in London this week.

The in-conversation style show, titled Andy Murray Centre Stage, saw him interviewed by sports broadcaster Andrew Cotter, and recount intimate details of his life on and off the court – including a period when he was separated from now wife, artist Kim Sears.

Scottish-born Murray, who retired from professional tennis following the 2024 Paris Olympics after an almost 20-year career, has been married to Sears for 10 years.

They first began dating in 2005 when he was 18 and she was 17.

But it hasn't always been smooth-sailing for the pair, who briefly separated for about six months between 2008 and 2009.

Murray touched on that time during his live show, which he also performed in Wimbledon, Edinburgh and his native Glasgow in recent weeks.

While talking about the period when Murray and Spears were separated, he said he went out and bought himself a sports car, according to a review article in The Telegraph.

"I bought a Ferrari," he said. "I called it Barry the Ferrari. I thought it was cool, but it didn't last very long.

"The first day I took it out to drive, it got pulled over by the police because the insurance hadn't cleared.

"I got rid of it over a couple of months, because it wasn't really me."

After a period apart, the couple reconciled and eventually married in April 2015 at a ceremony in Dunbane, Scotland.

Sears has always been a near-constant presence in his life, and is known for her colourful language while supporting her husband courtside.

In 2015 during the Australian Open, Sears was caught on camera in what appeared to be a swearing outburst during his tense set against Tomas Berdych.

She poked fun at the moment by attending the next match in a T-shirt that read, "Parental Advisory: Explicit Content".

It seems like things haven't changed too much in recent years.

During the same interview, Murray recalled: "At one of the shows we did a few nights ago, I messaged her during the half-time interval, asking, 'Is everyone OK?'"

Kim, he explained, was minding the couple's four-year-old daughter, Lola.

"She replied, 'It has been a f--king shambles. Lola's being a t--t. Hope the show's going better than this."

They are now proud parents of four children.

Murray has credited Sears with helping him throughout his career, including his long fight back from a hip injury in 2019.

"There's been a number of times in the last two years that I had stopped," he said at the time.

"I was like, 'I don't want to do this any more'. But Kim, she was always trying to keep me going, and trying to help get me back on the court, stay motivated, and always happy for me to go and train and go away and stuff."

He revealed in a 2019 documentary about his comeback, "[The injury] put a lot of strain on our relationship, just because I was down all the time."
