Here's another reason why cleaning up can be bad for your health.

Carla Rosso had just hopped out of her hot tub and noticed something laying on the ground in her driveway.

Thinking it was her dog Duchess' chew toys – a rope or something – she bent down to pick it up.

But it turns out there worse things to have in your hand than a dog's slobbery chew toy.

And something that falls into that category is a baby bloody rattle snake.

Which is exactly what she picked up.

"I grabbed it and as I was going up, I realised it was gushy and it had a feeling to it, like a hot dog sort of," she told Leanne Suter at ABC EyeWittness News in California.

"So I let it go.

"And for some reason I thought it was still on me."

This probably explains the footage of her violently squirming, which was captured on CCTV and uploaded to YouTube by her husband, Ariel, three days ago.=

It has since notched up more than 75,000 views and picked up the attention of viral news sites the world over.

Emergency services were called to remove the snake, driving home how serious things could have been if the baby rattler bit Rosso.

"I can't believe I picked up a snake," Rosso said. 

"Check it off my bucket list."
