Queensland man’s missing slipper turns up in the belly of a snake

A missing slipper belonging to a Queensland man has been recovered, but we reckon old mate might just want to buy himself a new pair.

Because after being pulled out of the belly of a carpet python, this slipper doesn’t look overly comfy anymore.

This wild bloody yarn comes to you from the Sally and Norman Hill, who run the N&S Snake Catcher Facebook page.

As we learned from a yarn from Patrick Williams at the ABC, the pair were called to out to remove a 2m carpet python from a Haigslea home on Friday.

The pair shared video of the house call on Facebook, with a caption that sounds as if it could be an Aussie instalment of a Nancey Drew, being “Mystery of a Missing slipper”.

“An elderly man had placed his slippers beside his bed Tuesday night before going to bed,” they said in the post.

“When the elderly man waking up Wednesday morning to only finding one slipper...”

After a few days searching, it became pretty clear where the other slipper had gone:

What followed was a truly bonkers update from the team at HerpVet, in nearby Mount Ommaney.

The dedicated snake catchers took the wild python to vets to have the slipper removed, and hoy boy did it make for an interesting surgery.

On Monday night the HerpVet team posted of photos taken by vet Joshua Llinas, and by Tuesday morning the pictures had clocked up more than 3000 likes and 2000 shares.

“You can’t make this stuff up folks,” Llinas said.

“This made for one of the most impressive radiographs I have seen.

“Surgery was performed under general anaesthetic to remove the foreign object, in a procedure called a coeliotomy and gastrotomy.

“After removal of the slipper, the stomach was closed in two layers, the body wall muscle was closed and surgical staples were used for the skin.

“The snake was given fluids, anti inflammatories and pain killers.

“He woke up well and is off to for rehabilitation in a couple of days.”

Llinas told Courier Mail journo Jacob Miley the snake would need to spend a good eight weeks in rehabilitation after the surgery, which required a 45cm incision.

Meanwhile, the slipper’s looking a little worse for wear.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first crazy snake surgery the vet clinic has seen.

Earlier this month, the team operated on a wild coastal carpet python who had swallowed a tennis ball:

“The ball was successfully removed, and he has received pain relief and post operative antibiotics,” vets said in a Facebook post.

“This big fella is expected to make a full recovery and will be released in six to eight weeks after the staples are removed.”
