Poland's foreign minister accidentally invented a country, Twitter responds appropriately

Meet Witold Waszczykowski, Poland's foreign minister and the father of a proud Caribbean nation.

Without this great man, the country of San Escobar wouldn't exist… on the internet, anyway.

San Escobar had a rich pop cultural history, which began a few days ago.

Gather children, as we tell you a tale of the birth of a nation.

It all started when Waszczykowski was supposed to have been cosying up to international officials in a bid to score a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The Guardian reports that on Tuesday Waszczykowski told journalists he had held meetings with officials from nearly 20 countries, including some Caribbean nations, listing countries “such as Belize or San Escobar”.

San Escoba, as some of you might have noted, doesn't feature on many (or any) maps.

Because it technically doesn't exist.

Unfortunately his gaffe didn't go unnoticed, and it wasn't long until the creative yet deeply sarcastic trolls of Twitter had formed a nation.

First there was the official Twitter account of San Escobar:

Then it got its own premier league football team:

It has an official airline:

It has pristine beaches:

An impressive art history:

Exciting marine life:

And progressive views on marriage equality:

But it has been around so long that some of its facilities are in need of an update:

The BBC reports Waszczykowski put the slip-up down to being sleepy and jumbling up the name of Saint Kitts and Nevis, a two-island Caribbean country known in Spanish as San Cristobal y Nieves.

"Unfortunately after 22 hours in planes and several connecting flights you can make a slip of the tongue," he said.

Too late mate.

And while the trolls may have blown his gaffe out of proportion, at least they backed him in his UN bid.
