Not everyone you see looking for a house on My Lottery Dream Home comes into money because of a lotto win.

That was the case for David, who had lost his job and was homeless when he inherited US$1.4 million (AUD$2.17 million) after his mother sadly passed away.

He now wanted to rebuild his life, and find a real place he could call home.

"I never thought I'd be here," he emotionally revealed to host David Bromstad. "I never thought I'd be in this position.

"I was homeless. I lost my job so all I had was my backpack. That's all I had."

You can catch a glimpse of the moment in the video above.

Joining David's property search was his partner Melanie, who he had shared a small apartment with in the months after his mother's passing.

Despite his million dollar inheritance, David budgeted just $420,000 (AUD$650,000) for his new home, with a modest wish list of at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a pool.

First on the list was a home on the higher end of the budget – a four bedroom, three bathroom house at $419,000 (AUD$649,000).

Walking in, David said he had never seen anything like it.

"This room," he said as he took in the entry way, "Is bigger than our apartment."

There was more space than David could imagine. "You deserve it," said Bromstad.

"From what we're coming from... this is ridiculous," said David. But Melanie's concern was that it was "a lot of house, and a lot of money too."

Option two was slightly smaller, a three-bedroom home selling for $329,900 (AUD$510,000) at the time. David was a fan of the huge backyard but felt it could be bigger.

Next up was a beautiful home that ticked all the boxes, and sat right in-between at $384,000 (AUD$595,000).

The hero feature? David's dream "kidney-shaped" pool.
