That sounds like the kind of “classic Straya” yarn we all love telling our mates from other countries.

But unfortunately it comes to you from across the ditch, off the coast of the Stewart Island, New Zealand.

Rose Gullery was out on the water with Shark Dive NZ, with someone on the boat chucking their leftover meat pie from lunch to the seagulls.

"One of my fellow divers said, imagine if a shark ate one of the pies," she told the NZ Herald.

"I picked up my camera and started recording, sure enough a great white shark jumped up and grabbed the pie."

Brilliant.

Gullery uploaded the video to YouTube on Friday, attracting more than 13,000 views over the weekend.

One YouTuber commented that it looked as if the shark was after the seagull rather than the discarded meaty pastry, but we refuse to believe that.

We mean, who would choose to eat a seagull when you have a delicious morsel of someone’s half-eaten clump of processed meat and pastry to mung on?
