Doctors left 'bewildered' as more than 1000 ants emerge from a little girl's ear on Body Bizarre

Doctors were left "bewildered" as more than 1000 ants were discovered emerging from a little girl's ear on Body Bizarre.

In the series which you can watch for free on 9Now Shreya, who was just 12-years-old at the time of filming, found herself at the centre of the medical mystery.

Shreya's mother Naina said that her daughter had been "beautiful and healthy since birth".

But at the age of 10, things took a turn for Shreya.

"One evening she sat here and complained her ear was hurting. When I checked, I found an ant," Naina explained.

When Shreya, 12, discovered an ant in her ear she never expected to find over 1000 over the course of 18 months. 9Now

At first Shreya's parents thought that an ant had just crawled into her ear, but they soon discovered the problem was much bigger than just a single ant.

The next day at school more ants emerged from Shreya's ear. 

"The first one came out, then there were two or three," Shreya told cameras.

"The first one was big then some others were small. I felt very scared," her friend added.

Each day up to 10 ants would appear, with Shreya describing it as "painful and itchy".

Doctors tried to remove ants from Shreya's ear but they kept coming back. 9Now

Worried that there was a nest in her ear, Shreya's parents took immediate action.

"We took her to the doctor and he took it lightly," Shreya's father Sanjay said.

"He removed the ant with a tool. They did an endoscopy and found another ant. Cleaning the ear, the doctor said there would be no more ants."

But the doctor was wrong. The ants kept coming, and on top of that they were carpenter ants which are among the largest in India. The queen can grow up to 13 millimeters long.

Somehow the ants were living and breeding in Shreya's head. 

Desperate, Shreya's parents took her from hospital to hospital, but all the doctors were left mystified and offered no permanent solution.

After five months and over 600 ants, it was suggested that Shreya visit Dr Talsania an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Even with his 30 years experience, Dr Talsania was left scratching his head.

The type of ants growing in Shreya's ear were carpenter ants - among the largest in India. 9Now

"It was a really surprising case," Dr Talsania admitted.

"Where are the ants coming from?

"She had a terrible pain at the time, so definitely the ants were causing it."

In the hopes of finding answers, Dr Talsania ran MRI and CT scans and searched for somewhere where an ant may have laid eggs.

It was something they needed to catch soon rather than later as any nests inside Shreya's head could cause serious damage.

Over 18 months, over 1000 ants had been discovered in Shreya's head.
