VIDEO: Gargantuan sea turtle washes up on Spanish beach

No-one wants to willingly see a dead sea creature or write about one but video of this giant leatherback turtle will make anyone look twice.

Locals strolling on a beach in Calella, Spain watched in awe as a two-metre leatherback turtle required an excavator to hoist it into the back of a truck.

The turtle, estimated to weigh 700 kilos, is a rare sighting in the Mediterranean with biologists saying only 10 have been spotted in the area in the last 2000 years.

Usually the 'Dermochelys Coriacea' are found in the open ocean but this is the second sighting in Spain within months.

A resident biologist in Calella, Pere Alzina, said that finding a "nesting area for leatherback turtles in the Mediterranean could result in a big surprise and discovery for the scientific community".

The mammoth reptile will be taken to a faculty at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) for an autopsy, RT reports.
