Doctors explain 'scary' moment 13-year-old boy collapsed after eating a hot potato

Rohan gave his dad the fright of his life when he fell unconscious at the dinner table.

The cause? A hot potato.

In an episode of Children's Hospital – which you can watch for free on 9Now – Rohan, 13, was taken by ambulance to the Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth.

There, his dad Joseph relayed exactly what happened.

"I put a hot potato in his mouth and he fainted," he explained at the time.

"He collapsed on the ground, and just sort of crumpled."

The children's emergency department deals with all kinds of medical events, but this arrival was certainly an unusual one.

With no burns on Rohan's tongue or mouth or no trouble breathing, doctors were trying to work out how a young boy went from perfectly healthy to unconscious in seconds.

"It was one of the hottest things I've ever tasted," Rohan told the doctors.

His dad recalled: "He felt very stiff, his eyes glazed over..."

As they stood Rohan up to move again, he had another episode.

The doctors ruled out the chance of a seizure, but after noting a pain in Rohan's stomach they believed a shock to the body's system could have caused him to faint.

"I didn't even know it happened until I woke up on the floor," Rohan continued.

One of the emergency doctors, Dr. Shane, had a theory.

"It was a scary thing to experience," admitted Rohan's father.

Rohan passed his medical tests to leave the hospital, but a big question remained – was Rohan allowed to eat hot potatoes again?

"That's why I told you to use a knife and fork, cut your potato in half," Rohan's dad reminded him with a smile.
