American Music Awards 2016: Zayn Malik takes a dig at 1D, forgets to thank Gigi Hadid

With Zayn Malik, his girlfriend Gigi Hadid, his former One Direction group mate Niall Horan and Gigi's ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas all in the house, the American Music Awards was guaranteed to offer at least one awkies moment.

That moment arrived when Zayn, 23, was accepting the gong for Best New Artist.

The first words out of his mouth: "This one just has my name on it, right." #MajorShade #KillerAccent

Clearly that was a dig at his old days in 1D, when prizes had to be shared among all five guys. We wonder how Niall felt about that sly boy-band reference.

That crack was intentional (we think), but we hope this one wasn't: After going through his thank-you list, Zayn exited the stage without mentioning the most important person, Gigi Hadid, his girlfriend and his co-star in his debut solo video 'Pillowtalk'. Yes, that Gigi Hadid, the one hosting the AMAs.

Either Gigi is a very forgiving girlfriend, or she didn't realise that Zayn left her off his gratitude list. She was waiting in the wings with a hug and a kiss when Zayn walked offstage.

And all remains well in the land of the pop lovebirds...for now.
