He's been on the Hollywood scene since the '90s but that doesn't mean Russell Crowe wants to dress the part.

Watch above to see the 50-year-old actor defending his casual attire to Sam Armytage and David Koch on Sunrise, while dressed in a hoodie and jeans.

Russell received online criticism during a prime-time interview with Seven's Mike Willesee last week, with some fans dissing him for wearing tracky-dacks instead of a suit.

"Russell Crowe wore a track suit on TV and has given up on life," one Twitter user said.

Another quipped: "Nice to see Russell Crowe wore his good tracksuit to his @sundaynighton7 interview."

The New Zealand-born star is currently doing the interview circuit to promote his directorial debut The Water Diviner, based on the story of an Aussie man who travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to locate his three missing sons.

But let's just hope he remembers his suit and tie to walk the film's world premiere red carpet at Sydney's State Theatre on Tuesday night!
