Kat Dennings details bizarre encounter with Tom Hardy: ‘He came inside, met my mum’

Thor and Two Broke Girls actress Kat Dennings has shared a wild encounter she had with Hollywood A-lister Tom Hardy that ended with her discovering him in her childhood home having tea with her mother.

Dennings, 40, revealed on TikTok that she auditioned to star opposite Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road in 2010 and had to complete a bizarre six-hour chemistry test with the Venom star.

“They were having chemistry reads, which basically means they will pair two actors that are both testing for roles together to kind of co-audition,” she explained.

“My audition was with Tom Hardy, who you may remember ended up getting the role. This audition took six hours.

“[Director] George Miller had this other man in the room with him who was his, I guess, his acting coach or his co-director or something.”

Dennings claimed that Miller didn’t say much during the audition, but the other man had plenty to say.

“Basically, what happened was an acting class – if it was the worst day of your life,” she said.

Dennings claimed he made her and Hardy switch roles, run around corners with cameras following them, and even “say the lines without saying the lines”, which she described as the worst part of the whole audition.

She said that Hardy – who ended up landing the role – took to it well, but she was “dying”.

But the best – and, perhaps, most bizarre – part of the day came after the audition had wrapped up.

Dennings was still early in her career, had no car and was living in her parents’ converted garage at the time, so had planned to call her mum to pick her up at the end of the day.

Hardy wasn’t having it.

“He drove me home. He was so lovely. We get to my house, which was my parents’ house because I still lived at home with my parents, and he came inside, and he met my mum,” Dennings recalled.

Her mum invited Hardy in, but Dennings was ready for the day to be over.

“She’s like, ‘come on in’, and I was like, ‘alright, Tom, this is a very special day, I hope you move further in this experience because I know that I’m not going to,’” she said.

“Then I went back to the converted garage where I lived, put my pyjamas on, took a nap.

“A few hours later, I go back into the main house, and Tom Hardy is still there, having tea with my mother, just chatting it up.”

As baffling as the whole situation was, it endeared Hardy to Dennings so much that she said she will be a fan of his for life – as will her mother.

Dennings isn’t the first star to open up about the gruelling audition process for Mad Max: Fury Road either.

Michael Fassbender, known for his roles in X-Men: First Class and Shame, confessed last year that he arrived to his audition an hour late only to be put through the same confusing process by the acting coach.

“George Miller has this acting coach, and it was so excruciating. I have been classically trained, so I have my process,” he told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“I felt like you are teaching your granny how to suck eggs here. This guy really got on my nerves… I could not wait to get out of there. Obviously, I didn’t get the part.”
