Actor and comedian Cook also playfully made light of the situation, tweeting, "Tom Hanks should just look in the mirror and heartfelt speech the s--- outta the coronavirus."

In a more heartfelt sentiment, DeGeneres tweeted, "Wishing you both a speedy recovery and sending lots of love."

Hanks' eldest son, Colin Hanks, has since expressed his thanks to friends and fans for rallying around his dad and stepmum.

"We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from everyone. My parents are receiving excellent care in Australia and are doing well (and in good spirits) given the circumstances," the 42-year-old tweeted shortly after the news broke.

"Despite the fact that I'm in LA and haven't seen them in over three weeks, we have been in constant contact and am confident that they will make a full recovery."

The couple's son, Chet Hanks, is currently travelling with them in Australia.
