Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have both contracted coronavirus, the actor revealed on social media yesterday.

The couple are currently on the Gold Coast, where Hanks was about to begin filming Baz Lurhmann movie. Officials from Queensland have released a statement revealing where the couple likely contracted COVID-19.

While they did not name Hanks and Wilson specifically, they announced that all of the state's new patients are non-contact cases. They are believed to have "contracted the illness outside Australia and traveled to Queensland with the virus", so were probably infected in the United States or while travelling to Australia.

Hanks and Wilson were in Australia for over a week before being diagnosed with COVID-19, and are now spending 14 days in isolation in a Gold Coast hospital.

They originally arrived in Australia in early January for the film's pre-production, though they returned to the US for the Academy Awards in February.

They are reportedly helping officials trace their whereabouts around Australia, in order to notify any people who might have come in contact with them. Earlier this week, Wilson was in Sydney where she performed at the Opera House and made several promo appearances.

Today Extra host David Campbell revealed that he will get tested following his interview with Wilson earlier in the week.

Production on the film that brought Hanks to Australia - an Elvis biopic helmed by legendary director Baz Luhrmann - has been shut down until further instructions.
