The Jonas Brothers announced as halftime headliners for Melbourne’s NFL game

The Jonas Brothers are set to be Burnin’ Up the Melbourne Cricket Ground next month as the headline entertainment during the NFL’s first regular season game in Australia.

Brothers Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas have been announced as the halftime show act when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG on September 11.

“We couldn’t be more excited to perform at halftime during the NFL’s first-ever regular season game in Australia,” the Jonas Brothers said in a statement.

“Playing at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of such passionate Australian fans is an incredible honour.

“We can’t wait to be part of this historic moment and celebrate with everyone in the stadium and watching around the world.”

It marks the group’s first performance at the MCG and first time headlining an NFL halftime show.

The Grammy-nominated trio, who are former Disney Channel child stars, are currently promoting their nostalgic Camp Rock 3 sequel around the globe and are behind the Hey Jonas! weekly podcast.

In December, fresh off their world tour, they became part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame with their hand and footprints lodged into cement outside the TCL Chinese Theatre, alongside a raft of other big names.

Next week they kick off The Burning Up Tour All Over Again shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden, a limited revival run of their life-changing 2008 Burning Up Tour.

There’s no denying the Jonas Brothers are on a career high and that’s part of the reason they were chosen for the show, which will be beamed live worldwide on Netflix.

Senior director of global game presentation and entertainment at the NFL Tim Tubito said the league chose the boy band as it wanted an “entertainment experience that reflects the scale and significance of the occasion”.

“The Jonas Brothers are global entertainers whose music connects across generations, making them the ideal artists to help us celebrate this historic game in Melbourne,” he said.

NFL general manager for Australia and New Zealand Charlotte Offord said the global superstars were the “perfect addition” to Australia’s first regular season NFL game thanks to their “incredible ability to bring people together through music”.

But, Jonas Brothers fans be warned to save some money for the merch tent, with the announcement also teasing a range of limited-edition merchandise specially for the occasion.

There’s no word yet on whether Nick’s famous wife, Priyanka Chopra, or Joe’s model girlfriend, Tatiana Gabriela, will join the group on their Australian adventures.

The JoBros, as they’re also known, won’t be the only performers across the two-day festival of American football.

Aussie artists including Sneaky Sound System, Kita Alexander, Peking Duk, Hot Dub Time Machine, Public Figures and Grinspoon are all part of the line-up.

The Melbourne match will be the first of seven games kicking off around the globe, marking the NFL’s most international games in a season yet.

Others include two games in London, followed by one game in each: Madrid, Mexico City, Munich, Paris, and Rio De Janeiro.
