The Bachelor's Laura Byrne says she suffered complications during the birth of her daughter Marlie-Mae

The Bachelor's Matthew Johnson aka Matty J and Laura Byrne have opened up about some of the complications surrounding the birth of their first child four months ago.

Welcoming Marlie-Mae in June, Byrne, 33, told Stellar that she wanted a natural birth but that she ended up being induced because the baby girl was in a posterior position.

"And then I was in labour and I didn't get a break. It was just a constant contraction. So after about an hour I was like, f--- this. Give me all the drugs," Byrne told the outlet.

"It was like night and day, going from being curled over the bed throwing up in agony to sitting up having a chat. I was so off my rocket."

Of Marlie-Mae's unusual position, Byrne said that, "They didn't realise it right away, either. She was stuck; they needed to get her out immediately. So there were complications and it wasn't the easiest of births. But I was just so happy that she was out and in the world that my memory of it is not traumatic."

Chiming in, Matty J said it was tough to watch his fiancée go through it.

"It was brutal, sitting on the sidelines watching her get belted like that. I'm going, 'This is not how I thought it would work.'"

Turning to Byrne in the interview, the radio host said, "And I just wanted to help you as best I could. But there is nothing you can really do other than, like, calling a midwife and holding your hand."

Prior to falling pregnant with Marlie-Mae, Byrne told the magazine that she suffered a miscarriage which she said made her feel like there was "something wrong with [her]."

"And I felt very alone, as though there must be something wrong with me," she confessed.

She continued, "But the more I spoke to people, I realised how common it is; so I speak about it with honesty because there is still such a stigma around it, and I don't want to feel as if I'm rubbing a happy ending in someone else's face, like it was just so easy."

While Marlie-Mae's birth was more challenging than either of them anticipated, Matty J said that he couldn't be happier about becoming a father.

"Being a dad was something I always wanted," he told Stellar.

"I was that guy in the office — whenever somebody would bring a child into work, all the women would run and see it, and I was there with them. So this shift has been easy to manage."

Byrne and Johnson first met on The Bachelor two years ago and got engaged in April.
