Taylor Swift slammed over teaser clip for 'Look What You Made Me Do'

The old Taylor Swift is dead (RIP), but the new Taylor appears strikingly similar to another pop icon. That is, if you believe the hype on social media.

After dropping her new single 'Look What You Made Me Do' Thursday night, her first new music in three years, the 27-year-old released a teaser clip of the forthcoming music video, set to debut at this weekend's MTV Video Music Awards.

The 20-second clip features graphic text that spells out "look what you made me do" intercut with quick glimpses of her edgy new persona.

We see her dressed in red and sitting on a gilded throne, a snake ring shining on her gold manicured hand.

She ferociously bites down on a diamond necklace, as one does, her hands blinged-out with thick diamond rings.

She swings carefree in an orange jumpsuit. That kinda looks like a super glam prison uniform, if we're being honest.

The coup de grâce? A shot of Taylor, clad in a black leotard and fishnet stockings, standing tall before her squad of crop-top wearing male dancers (including YouTube star Todrick Hall).

Social media appeared to lash out over the clip, with many calling out the similarities between 'Look What You Made Me Do' and the gothic-inspired visuals in Beyoncé's 'Formation' video.

Some accused Taylor of appropriating African-American culture.

And called 'Look What You Made Me Do' a "basic white girl" version of Bey's Grammy-winning album Lemonade.

As Buzzfeed pointed out, Taylor's black leotard look was strikingly similar to ensembles Beyoncé has been donning since her 'Single Ladies' days.

'Look What You Made Me Do' is rumoured to be a not-so-thinly veiled jab at Kanye West, with whom she's had an on-and-off feud with ever since he famously upstaged her at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Further fanning the flames, sleuthy social media users made a grim point about the release date for Taylor's sixth album, Reputation, set for November 10, 2017.

"Taylor Swift's album is being released on the 10th anniversary of Kanye West's mom's death. Let that sink in," wrote one Twitter user.

Others came to Taylor's defense.

"Yes, I am sure Taylor Swift googled 'what day did Kanye West's mom die' and was like. Yep. That's it," wrote another.

There's been no response from Taylor's camp about the apparent controversy.
