Canadian rock band Sum 41 announces split after 27 years: 'This is devastating'

Canadian rock band Sum 41 has announced it is splitting up after 27 years on the music scene.

The group, which includes only remaining original member Deryck Whibley, revealed it will part ways after its farewell tour and final album.

Sum 41 announced the news on social media via a statement.

"Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way," the band said on Facebook.

"It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first. Sum 41 will be disbanding.

"We will be finishing all our current upcoming tour dates this year."

The statement concluded: "Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41."

The band said it would also be releasing its final album, Heaven :x: Hell and will be embarking on a final worldwide headline tour to "celebrate" the end of an era.

Fans flocked to the comment section of the band's Facebook post, sharing their dismay at Sum 41's shock split, with over 10,000 messages posted.

"Been a fan since All Killer was released when I was 11 years old," one fan wrote.

"This is devastating news."

"This is genuinely terrible news. You guys have been one of my top favourite bands since I was a kid back in the 00's," another said.

Sum 41, which was formed in 1996, first catapulted to international fame in 2001 with their smash-hit Fat Lip.

The band went on to release seven studio albums, the most recent dropping in 2019.

Lead vocalist Whibley, 43, is Sum 41's last original member. He formed the band alongside drummer Steve Jocz, bassist Richard Roy and vocalist Jon Marshall 27 years ago.

The band now comprises Whibley alongside guitarists Dave Baksh and Tom Thacker, bassist Jason McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo.

Beyond his long career as the frontman in Sum 41, Whibley is also well-known for his four-year marriage to fellow Canadian singer Avril Lavigne.

The couple married in 2005 before splitting in September 2009.
