Welsh rockers Stereophonics have been forced to cancel their upcoming Australian tour dates after frontman Kelly Jones suffered a "displaced jaw joint".

Jones said he was "gutted, saddened and disappointed" by having to cancel the shows, which were due to kick off in Sydney on October 17.

The UK band were then set to play Brisbane and two shows in both St Kilda and Fremantle in support of their latest album, Make 'Em Laugh, Make 'Em Cry, Make 'Em Wait.

"Flying long distance is not medically advised," the 51-year-old explained in a statement posted to social media on Wednesday.

"I have cancelled no more than four shows in 30 years and I hope you can trust this decision was not taken lightly.

"I work hard to put on a great show every night, my prep starts in the morning through to showtime.

"I respect you as audience members and I respect my crew and band brothers, the bed on which I lay, too much to travel with a doubt."

Jones said the dislocated jaw wasn't caused by singing but was "just one of life's dizzying mysteries", adding that he would start physiotherapy rehabilitation, with healing his "priority right now".

"There's 13 studio albums there…spin the black circle until the next time. Love and good health to you all," he signed off.

Refunds will be given at the point of purchase, the band advised fans.

Stereophonics, who have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, are also cancelling the Dubai shows they had scheduled for later this month.

However, they're hoping Jones recovers in time to keep their planned December dates around the UK.

In June, Jones spoke with Nine entertainment editor Richard Wilkins about how much the band were looking forward to their Australian shows, their first since 2019.

"We've been doing across America and Canada, Mexico, Europe, so we're looking forward to getting back down there," he said.

It's not the first time the band's been forced to pause things over health concerns.

Jones previously had a nodule cut from his vocal chords in 2018, which led to a long recovery process that forced him to "relearn to sing".
