Sophie Monk bites back as comedian Tom Gleeson rips in: 'They think I'm a stripper'
When Sophie Monk agreed to be a guest on Tom Gleeson's Hard Chat segment on ABC's The Weekly With Charlie Pickering, she probably wasn't expecting to break the comedian.
The hilarious interview grew tense in the very first minute when the funny man hinted at the 37-year-old's failed solo album and now apparent fame-hungry status.
"You’re an actor, singer, model, radio presenter, brand ambassador," Tom, 47 said. "When you are at the airport, under immigration, do you write 'trying to be famous?'"
"I actually have written 'celebrity' once. But now I just put 'entertainer', which usually they think [means] I’m a stripper.”
The chat then moved to Sophie's early days in showbiz, before she signed onto the reality show Popstars that would launch her career.
"You started out as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator," Tom said. "She died when she was 36. You’re 37. Is that why your career died a year ago?"
"It’s doing better than it was a few years ago," Sophie replied, unwaveringly. "That was sad. You know when you hit [gestures down], and then you go down and up.
"So I’m trying to get lots of free stuff at the moment in case I lose it again."
And in case you had any doubt about the former Bardot singer's ability to hold her own while completely tearing herself to shreds, proof came at the end of the chat, when she recalled her school days, leaving a normally stern Tom in stitches.
"People think I’m smart," the media personality said. "But a teacher at school actually said I had a very high IQ and went and checked it. A few days later I asked her what my IQ was and she said, no it was low."
And with that zinger, Tom was done.
