‘So grateful to be alive’: Minnie Driver details horror car crash in France

Actress Minnie Driver has shocked her famous friends and fans alike with a video from her bed in London clad in a neckbrace.

The Good Will Hunting star detailed a car crash she and friend Ben Homewood were involved in while they were in France recently, saying they crawled out of the crumpled wreck and are lucky to be alive.

Driver, 56, got emotional as she credited the Kia EV2’s airbag design for saving their lives and thanking the car company on behalf of their family and friends.

“I’ve never been in a crash before, but the 360-degree airbags are what saved our lives,” the actress said in the clip, posted to Instagram on Thursday (Friday morning AEST).

“The fact the entire car didn’t just concertina and crush us is down to the design of that car – which is frankly astonishing.”

As she realised it was beginning to sound like a promotional ad, the Emily in Paris actress clarified that’s not what it was.

“This is categorically not a car ad — can you imagine if that’s what I was doing,” she stated with a laugh.

“I need to celebrate the car that saved us.”

Adding soon after that she’s “so grateful to be alive”.

Naomi Watts and Chelsea Handler were among the famous names to comment on her post, shocked by her story.

Driver had been sharing updates with her followers on her trip to Paris and started this one by revealing how and why the content had changed.

“Paris update is that I’m actually back in London,” she started the video.

“I got into a really bad car accident a few days ago with my friend Ben and we somehow walked out of it. Well, we didn’t walk out of it, we crawled out of it, but we did get out of it alive.”

The actress revealed the crash happened “on a country road in the middle of France” leaving her with a sprained neck.

“To be very clear, it was not our fault ... a car didn’t stop at an intersection and was going at speed and we just T-boned it,” she revealed.

While Driver said she was lucky not to be too physically hurt, she admitted she’s “in a sort of shock” and cries “all the time” but believes a differently designed small car would have crumpled on impact.

“But I’m gonna heal and the reason that I’m not dead, honestly, is the car that we were driving.”

In the caption accompanying the clip, the mum-of-one, who has a 17-year-old son, thanked passersby who helped them.

“Shout out to the van driver who stopped and helped us before the ambulances arrived,” she wrote.

“Special mention to the car who slowed down took in the scene and drove off without stopping.

“My brain keeps replaying the crash which is very hard but seems to be a necessary part of processing. Weeping too, feels good and helpful.”

The clip also included a shot of the car after the crash and a shot of Driver and Homewood in a hospital corridor.
