Shailene Woodley details health struggle: 'Couldn't walk for longer than five minutes'

Actress Shailene Woodley has detailed a health struggle she faced early on in her career.

In a past interview with The New York Times, Woodley revealed she was "very, very sick" and went through a "very scary physical situation" while filming the Divergent movie franchise.

Now, years on, Woodley has revealed she struggled to walk and was losing her hearing.

"I haven't spoken about what exactly it was because that feels like a personal thing that I don't need to disclose," Woodley said on the recent She MD podcast episode.

"It got to the point where I was losing my hearing," she detailed.

"I couldn't walk for longer than five minutes at a time without having to lay down for hours and hours and hours and sleep. Everything I ate hurt my stomach."

Woodley said she went through a "conflation of issues and diagnoses" from doctors.

The star said it was a "long journey" for about a decade to heal and get healthy.

Woodley told the podcast hosts "a lot of other things came from feeling so much discomfort physically", sharing she struggled with her mental health.

The actress opened up about developing a fear of food and facing body dysmorphia and identity confusion.

"It was a journey that ultimately physically resolved itself," Woodley shared.

"I am very healthy. I'm so happy to be able to say that," the actress, now in her 30s, said.

In her 2020 interview, Woodley said she "said no to a lot of opportunities" due to to the health issues she went through while filming Divergent.

Woodley was just 21 when she starred as heroine Tris Prior in the first Divergent film installment in 2014, adapted from the book of the same name.

The actress would play the leading lady in the next two movies, Insurgent and Allegiant.

A year after wrapping the Divergent franchise, Woodley starred in the 2017 series Big Little Lies alongside Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz.
