Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announce they're expecting their first child together

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has announced she and her fiancée, US footballer Kristie Mewis, are expecting their first child together.

Kerr and Mewis announced the special news, sharing a picture of four photos taken inside a photo booth alongside the caption, "Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025."

But while most have celebrated the exciting news leaving messages of congratulations in the comments, the Matildas captain and her fiancée have also been met with homophobic abuse.

Chelsea Pride, and LGBTQIA+ association affiliated with Chelsea Football Club, whom Kerr currently plays for, condemned the abuse, sharing a post on X defending the couple.

"Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society," Chelsea Pride wrote.

"It's heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.

"Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down comments and even delete posts, posts that should have been shining moments of joy, from the powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025."

The association, who's slogan is "No to hate" shared that it's more than just a motto, "It's a battle cry."

"It's a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception."

The news of Kerr and Mewis' pregnancy comes a year after the pair confirmed they were getting married.

In the announcement photos shared to Instagram, Mewis and Kerr are seen kissing and celebrating while holding a photo of an ultrasound.

Weeks after the FIFA Women's World Cup ended in 2023, rumours began swirling that Kerr and Mewis were engaged.

Footage of Mewis posted onto Gotham FC's official Instagram page showed the footballer sporting what appeared to be a ring on her left hand.

"Omg, is Kristie wearing an engagement ring???" one person wrote.

"Not the ROCK," another excitably noted.

On September 25 last year, Kerr posted a collection of pictures to Instagram including one of the couple posing for a mirror selfie, looking loved up as ever.

Fans were quick to hone in on the large rock on Mewis' left hand, adding fuel to the engagement rumours.

Just weeks later, in November, the couple confirmed they were engaged.

Mewis was the first to confirm their engagement in an interview with People magazine.

Two weeks later, Kerr shared photos on social media from the moment she proposed, revealing the couple's secret engagement took place months earlier.

"September 1st, 2023," Kerr, 30, captioned the photos, followed by a white love heart.

The pair were first romantically linked back in 2021, after the duo faced off against each other at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Following the American team's victory against the Matildas, Kerr and Mewis were pictured sharing an embrace on the field.

Three days later, the couple went Instagram official, with the Chelsea FC striker sharing a shot of herself kissing Mewis to her official Instagram page alongside a "❤️".

Within moments of sharing the baby news, the sporting power couple's comments were flooded with messages from loved ones and fans from around the globe.

The Matildas and Chelsea's women's side led the congratulations, alongside teammates Mary Fowler and Kyah Simon.

"Oooft congrats!!" radio host also Brittany Hockley posted beneath the photo alongside hearts.
