Rob Thomas “almost killed” his Matchbox Twenty bandmate Paul Doucette after hitting him in the head with a microphone stand.

The incident happened during the band’s performance at the Illinois State Fair on Sunday, August 16 (Monday, August 17 AEST), as Thomas swung his microphone stand around his head.

A video of the moment circulating on social media shows Thomas with his back to Doucette when the microphone stand swings behind him, hits Doucette in the head and knocks out his in-ear monitors.

Doucette left the stage to seek assistance as Thomas realised what had happened and addressed the crowd.

“Every night I’m over here, and I’m throwing this Goddamn thing around. It nailed him. It nailed him hard,” he said.

“My best friend in the world, and I think I almost killed him, and I feel really bad about this. Will you give us one second?

“By the way, it felt like a really good idea right up until now. I feel like an ass.”

Doucette soon returned to the stage with a smile on his face and what appeared to be a glass of alcohol in his hand.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve told you about swinging that f---ing thing,” Doucette joked.

“I knew it was only a matter of time. It’s been 30 years. Now, admittedly, I’ve been in the back for the first half of that, and maybe I’ve gotta go back there because, obviously, it’s safer.”

He held his glass up to the crowd and joked that it would be the only thing “that’s gonna help me right now”.

After the show, Doucette took to Instagram to post a video from the tour bus explaining that when he was hit in the head, his in-ear monitor smashed in his ear.

The clip showed someone removing fragments of the monitor from Doucette’s ear.

“Oh, I f---ing feel that. That is not fun. That is not fun. Please don’t move the bus,” he said.

“F---in’ Rob!”

The video was posted alongside the caption, “After 30 years of mic swinging, Rob claimed his first victim: @repairmethod of course.”
