Cillian Murphy takes out the gong for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 2024 Oscars
Cillian Murphy has taken out the coveted Best Actor in a Leading Role gong at the 2024 Oscars.
The Irish actor, who won for his role as Robert J. Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, was up against several big names for one of the biggest awards of the night.
Murphy, 47, took to the stage for his acceptance speech after kissing his wife in the audience and immediately thanked director Christopher Nolan and gave a shout out to his co-stars.

He also paid tribute to his wife Yvonne McGuinness and their two children, Malachy and Aran, before dedicating his Oscar to the "peacemakers everywhere".
"It's been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you have taken me on over the last 20 years. I owe you more than I can say," he said.
"Thank you so much. Every single crew member, every single cast member on Oppenheimer you guys carried me through."
He added: "I'm a proud Irishman standing here tonight."

The Irish star thanked his co-stars and dedicated the award to the 'peace makers' of the world. ABC America
Murphy went on to speak about the premise of the blockbuster Oppenheimer, which was about the father of the atomic bomb.
"You know, we made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb. For better or worse we're all living in Oppenheimer's world," he said.
"I would like to dedicate this to the peace makers everywhere."

Murphy was up against some titans of industry for the Best Actor award, including Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo in Rustin, Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.
He was the front-runner for the leading man gong, marking his first-ever Oscar. In fact, this year was the first time Murphy had been nominated for an Academy Award.
Oppenheimer was Murphy's sixth collaboration with director Nolan.
Moments later, actress Emma Stone took out the gong for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her part in the hit film Poor Things.
